Programmer surprised name change is so difficult after naming his son "asdf"
It will takes weeks until all the paperwork is done. Until then, an 8 month old British boy is still legally asdf Graham. It's an unfortunate temporary name given by his father Bob, who is a professional programmer.
Father comments:
I just typed something assuming I'd change it later, when the child is ready to be deployed home. Turns out changing his name involves refactoring the whole British government, basically. It's ridiculous.
Bob plans to fix this issue by proposing multiple levels of caching for people's names, starting from hospital records, to municipal all the way to the top levels of government. Simple heuristics will control cache invalidation as soon as someone decides to rename their child, and everything will be easy.
